Functional Patterns New Jersey exists to improve how people move by addressing movement at its foundation.

We believe that better movement supports better outcomes—not only physically, but in how people adapt to stress, perform in daily life, and sustain their bodies over time.

Rather than chasing trends or short-term solutions, FPNJ is built around long-term development, structure, and consistency.

Our Approach

FPNJ follows the Functional Patterns training system, which focuses on how the human body organizes movement in relation to gravity and force.

We work from fundamental principles rather than isolated exercises. This means observing how posture, gait, and movement patterns influence the body as a whole—and training accordingly.

The Big Four

At the center of the Functional Patterns model are four fundamental human actions:

These patterns form the foundation for how the human body interacts with gravity, generates force, absorbs impact, and transfers energy through space.

Rather than training isolated muscles or disconnected exercises, we look at how these fundamental actions are organized and expressed in each individual. Limitations or compensations in these patterns often show up later as pain, inefficiency, or reduced performance.

By improving how the body stands, walks, runs, and throws, we aim to improve movement quality at its root—supporting better outcomes in daily life, athletics, and long-term health.

Functional Patterns
Functional Patterns is a biomechanics-based training system that focuses on how the body is designed to stand, walk, run, and rotate. Instead of chasing symptoms, we assess your movement, correct compensations, and rebuild the fundamentals—so force is absorbed and transferred efficiently through your whole body.
PAIN
Reduce Pain
A lot of “pain” is a load-management problem: joints and tissues taking stress they weren’t built to handle. We work from the ground up—feet, hips, ribcage, and shoulder mechanics—to improve alignment, gait, and how you decelerate, so daily movement stops beating you up.
POSTURE
Posture + Alignment
Posture isn’t a cue—it’s an outcome of better mechanics. We train your body to stack and organize itself through breathing, pelvic/ribcage position, and integrated strength, so you stand taller and move with less tension, without “trying to sit up straight” all day.
RUNNING
Running Mechanics
Running isn’t just “cardio”—it’s repeated single-leg deceleration. We rebuild gait fundamentals and progress into running mechanics so you learn to absorb force, control rotation, and push off efficiently, helping you move smoother with less breakdown.
THROWING
Athletic Rotation
Power comes from timing + force transfer, not isolated muscles. We train how the hips, torso, and shoulder complex work together so you can rotate and throw with better sequencing—great for baseball, golf, tennis, martial arts, and anyone who needs strong, repeatable mechanics.
FAMILY
Build the Foundation
Kids don’t need more random drills—they need better foundations. We teach young athletes (and busy parents) the essentials: standing, walking, running, and rotation, plus the habits that support them. The goal is a body that performs now and still feels good later.
